A Different Point of View

WoWScrnShot_051814_204510

Vanlew is a shadow. You could walk past her and never know she’s there. The last thing you’d feel is her dagger in your neck, then the blackness of the void.

So, Vanlew is my rogue. She’s named after Elizabeth Van Lew, a woman who built and ran a spy ring back in the American Civil War! Pretty impressive stuff.

She’s one of the few characters I levelled to 90 through questing, as opposed to endless dungeon-running, as she just killed everything so damn quickly. I highly recommend playing a rogue at some point, they’re pretty fun! Stealth, ambush, mutilate, finisher. Boom.

She’s been Assassination spec for all her 90 levels, and I’m attempting to grind up a couple swords so I can give Combat a go, as I hear from a friend it’s pretty fun.

What a time to fall asleep on the job!

What a time to fall asleep on the job!

So yeah, it’s a massively different playstyle from what I am used to. With the warlock and the shaman, I stand back and nuke enemies from afar, whereas with the rogue (and the monk too!) I’m up close and personal with my victim. Certainly makes fights feel slightly more intense; one wrong move and I could be toast (hello Dark Shaman). A tangible sense of danger, living life on a knife-edge!

What do I wanna do with her? Get LFR-geared at least, maybe take her into flex raids? She’s one of several characters I like enough to consider getting a legendary cloak for, so I should probably pick one. Current front-runners are Shamwhoa the shaman, Lunchi the monk, and ol’ Vanlew up there.

Anyway, time to rack up some more tokens from Timeless Isle. I’m still pretty miffed that I can’t pickpocket the Ordon mobs there!

Even your searchlights can't find me!

5.4.8: A Quick Post

You know what? 5.4.8 sounds pretty cool to me. It may allow me to get the damn cloak on more than just my warlock (my elemental shaman and warrior have both stalled at A Test of Valor, because EFFORT), and the extra upgrades? Ability to buy VP for Timeless Coins? Sounds mighty grand.

Myself and a couple of guildies are particularly excited about it because it means we may be able to start raiding again. We’re extremely casual, with only about 6 or 7 of us who attend nearly every week. The others in our group are either randoms from the guild, or people from OQ or /2, and we all vary in ability. If we can get better gear that allows us to kill a boss more? Maybe even 2? Well, that sets us further on the road to getting that Garrosh kill we all secretly want!

Wait. Garrosh kill? More like Garrosh IMPRISON, amirite? Silly pandas.

nameless

Here’s where my guild are at the moment. We are Nameless, and we are 4/14! Hopefully, we’ll be even further progressed.

What’s the downside of this? Well, to upgrade a new item, you need to spend a whole week’s worth of VP on it, and for those of us who don’t obsessively cap valor on a character (Raenah has 2/2 on all items, and so I just don’t get VP on her anymore) it’s gonna take AGES to get upgraded. Unless…

Remove (or increase) the Valor cap? Increase VP gains? Will the double VP work OUTSIDE of A Test of Valor? Will the Double VP work with those new VP-for-Timeless-Coins deals?

So many unanswered questions. And frankly, for those of us fully upgraded, so long as we hit the 3k cap before 5.4.8 hits, we can upgrade a crapload of items right off the bad to 4/4. Buy some of those VP coins, upgrade 2 more before we hit the cap. Easy done.

Final thoughts? I like how instead of nerfing the content, making the fights less weaker, they choose to buff us instead! It also gives us more reason to stay on the Timeless Isle, which to be honest I am still not bored of yet. So many Timeless Coins. Got exalted with Shaohao, bought the mount, and STILL had 40k left over.

But what I really want to see is something to do with Lesser Charms of Good Fortune. I currently have nearly 4000 on Raenah, whereas Korbenik, Shamwhoa, Shawujing et al struggle to get 50 each week. Let me share ’em out at least if I can’t spend them on anything else! Or even better, make them account-wide! All charms you acquire on a character go into a sort of pool that all your characters can access!

That’d be nice.

Here’s Korbenik the Robopanda/Flashlight just before she turns into a wolf and EATS YOU.

Mounts! Pets! Random Drops Of Evilness!

So why solo anything at all? Well, there’s bragging rights, of course. There’s also gold to be made, both from the bosses themselves, as well as the items they drop.

Today, I’d like to focus on something else. Some enemies, whether super-tough raid bosses, lowly dungeon bosses, or rare spawning enemies out in the wilds of Azeroth, have a chance to drop mounts and battle pets! Let’s have a look at what Vanilla yields for us!

Vanilla

Fairly sparse for mounts, we have the Deathcharger’s Reins that drop from Lord Aurius Rivendare in Stratholme first. The good things about this mount are that you can reset the instance when it inevitably doesn’t drop, and everything is hilariously easy to kill because it’s probably half the level you are.

For our raid mounts, we’re going to the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. There are 4 varieties of Qiraji Resonating Crystal; Blue, Yellow, Green and Red (the rarest of the 4). These drop from every enemy in the sprawling dungeon!

Lower Blackrock Spire has 2 battle pet drops. Quartermaster Zigris drops the Worg Carrier, and Mother Smoulderweb drops the Smoulderweb Hatchling. Deadmines has the Green Wing Macaw which drops from the various pirates later in the instance. A number of pets drop from raids too, for the Raiding With Leashes achievement. Temple of Ahn’Qiraj holds the Mini Mindslayer from The Prophet Skeram, the Anubisath Idol from the Twin Emperors, and the Viscidus Globule from Viscidus.

Blackwing Lair holds the Untamed Hatchling from Razorgore, Chrominius from Chromaggus, and the Death Talon Whelpguard from Broodlord Lashlayer. Molten Core has the Harbinger of Flame, Corefire Imp and Ashstone Core from Sulfuron Harbinger, Magmadar, and Golemagg respectively.

Burning Crusade

Pet-wise, we have the Phoenix Hatchling from Kael’thas Sunstrider in Heroic Magisters’ Terrace. The Lil’ Bad Wolf, Menagerie Custodian, Netherspace Abyssal and Fiendish Imp drops from The Big Bad Wolf, The Curator, Prince Malchezaar and Terestrian Illhoof respectively in Karazhan. Serpentshrine Cavern holds the Tideskipper from Morogrim Tidewalker, the Tainted Waveling from Hydross the Unstable, and the Coilfang Stalker from the frustrating Lady Vashj. Tempest Keep holds the Pocket Reaver from the Void Reaver, the awesome Lesser Voidcaller from High Astromancer Solarian, and the Phoenix Hawk Hatchling from Al’ar.

Speaking of Al’ar, he drops as a mount from Kael’thas Sunstrider in the same instance, Tempest Keep. His dungeon counterpart in Heroic Magisters’ Terrace drops a mount as well as the above pet; the Swift White Hawkstrider. Attument the Horseman in Karazhan drops the Fiery Warhorse’s Reins, with a disgustingly low drop rate.

Wrath of the Lich King

Pets! We have a small number in Naxxramas. Maexxna drops the Giant Bone Spider, Loatheb the Fungal Abomination, and Gluth the Stitched Pup. Let’s hope the next expansion adds more pets to the other raids! Raiding With Leashes 3 or 4 maybe?

There are two dungeon mounts! Both drop from heroic instances, and one is a timed run. The Culling of Stratholme drops a mount. From the point where you have to fight 10 waves of enemies, you have 25 minutes to get to the last alleyway to kill the Infinite Corruptor. He drops the Reins of the Bronze Drake. Skadi the Ruthless in Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle drops the Reins of the Blue Proto Drake.

Sarthation in the Obsidian Sanctum drops 2 mounts; one on 10 man, one on 25 man. Both require you to leave the other three bosses in the raid alive as you engage Sartharion. Reins of the Black Drake drops on 10 man, Reins of the Twilight Drake on 25. Malygos is another double-dropping dragon, but these can be won on any difficulty. Reins of the Azure Drake and Reins of the Blue Drake are your (possible) rewards for mashing 1 1 2 3 repeatedly.

The bosses in the Vault of Archavon all have a chance of dropping the Reins of the Grand Black War Mammoth. All of them are easy to kill, but the Ice Watcher is moderately tougher than the others. Reins of the Onyxian Drake drops from who else but Onyxia! It’s a fabulous purple colour.

The two more difficult kills drop possibly the best mounts in the game. Yogg-Saron on 25 man mode with 0 keepers assisting has a chance to yield Mimiron’s Head, and heroic 25 man Lich King has a chance to give you Invincible’s Reins. Not every class is able to solo these, so try and assemble a small group if you want, and run it until you all have it!

Cataclysm

Slim picking here for pets. The parrot still drops from pirates in heroic Deadmines, and Mojo drops from frogs in Zul’Aman. Use Amani Hex Sticks on them to get a chance at the pet!

Dungeon mounts are plentiful compared to previous expansions! Altairus in Vortex Pinnacle drops Reins of the Drake of the North Wind, and is easily soloable, as is Slabhide in Stonecore. He yields the Reins of the Vitreous Stone Drake. Kilnara and Mandokir in Zul’Gurub have a chance to drop the Swift Zulian Panther and the Armored Razzashi Raptor respectively. Zul’Aman has the Amani Battle Bear, which you receive from an NPC after defeating the first 4 bosses within 25 minutes (you start with 15 minutes on the timer, but the first 2 bosses add 5 minutes each on their death). It’s soloable, but not easy!

Al’akir in the Throne of the Four Winds drops the Reins of the Drake of the South Wind, and is an easy solo. What is NOT an easy solo is the encounter before it, and is something I am still working on myself. Do yourself a favour and get a group for this one.

Alysrazor and Ragnaros in the Firelands drop mounts; The Flametalon of Alysrazor and the Smoldering Egg of Millagazor. Alysrazor is a weird fight, but easy to solo once you get the hang of it. Ragnaros is not an easy solo, but doable.

Ultraxion in Dragon Soul is another non-easy solo; as a warlock, you need to be in 570+ gear. He has a chance to drop Experiment 12-B. Madness of Deathwing drops 2 mounts. Reins of the Blazing Drake drops on either difficulty, and either raid size. Life-Binder’s Handmaiden drops from heroic mode only.

Mists of Pandaria

I don’t think most of these fights can be soloed, but hey, you’re welcome to try. The Sha of Anger drops Reins of the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent. Son of Galleon’s Saddle drops from Galleon, shockingly. Nalak drops Reins of the Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent. The awful Oondasta drops the awesome Reins of the Cobalt Primordial Direhorn. People still occasionally form raid groups for the purpose of farming these mounts, so hit up OQ or trade chat!

Zandalari Warbringers located around Pandaria have a low chance to drop one of 3 mounts! Their Primordial Direhorn mounts come in Amber, Jade and Slate varieties. Easily soloable by warlocks, one of my earliest guides details how to do so!

Elegon has a chance to drop an AMAZING mount, the Reins of the Astral Cloud Serpent. Horridon in Throne of Thunder can drop Spawn of Horridon, and Ji-Kun Clutch of Ji-Kun. Garrosh Hellscream in Siege drops the Kor’kron Juggernaut with a 100% drop rate on heroic, but this drop chance will be nerfed to stupid-low levels when 6.0 hits.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and get some pets and mounts!

A Newbie Guide To Affliction!

WoWScrnShot_031314_232436

Here’s Raenah! And today, instead of nuking enemies to death as a Destruction warlock, she has decided to go Affliction. But how do we aff? Well, here’s a nice, basic guide!

Secondary Resource: Soul Shards!

These are what fuel your ability Haunt, as well as adding utility to other spells through the use of Soulburn. You regenerate them through procs of Nightfall, and through the use of Drain Soul.

Important Abilities

Your DoTs are your bread & butter here. Agony has no cast time, and each time it deals damage, it adds a stack to itself. The more stacks it has, the more damage it does! Ideally you want to refresh it before it drops off to preserve the number of stacks (which cap at 10). Unstable Affliction and Corruption are slightly simpler. The former has a cast time that can be reduced by a glyph, and the only maintenance they need is for you to refresh them before they drop off.

Haunt is your main debuff. It increases DoT damage on your target by 35% and lasts 8 seconds. It costs a shard to cast, and will be the main spender of them. You want to refresh Haunt as the debuff falls off, not before.

You have 2 channeled abilities which function as your filler. Malefic Grasp channels for 4 seconds, and ticks every 1. When it deals damage, it also forces your DoTs to tick for 30% of their usual damage. It cannot be cast while moving, unless you take Kil’jaeden’s Cunning as your level 90 talent. Drain Soul is your execute spell, and replaces Malefic Grasp in your rotation when your target is below 20%. It channels for 12 seconds, deals damage every 2, and refills soul shards when it deals damage every second time, or when it kills an enemy. When your target is below 20%, it deals double damage, and forces your DoTs to deal 60% of their damage per tick. Fancy!

Fel Flame is your movement DPS. It’s instant cast, but has an exorbitant mana cost that prevents spamming. It’s also rendered useless if you take KJC as your 90 talent (which makes Malefic Grasp your movement filler).

Seed of Corruption is your AoE spell. It places an 18 second DoT on your target, which then explodes when they take a certain amount of damage or die. This explosion damages all enemies within 10 yards. When used with Soulburn, the explosion also adds Corruption to each affected target.

Soulburn also has an affect on Soul Swap. Normally, Soul Swap copies your DoTs and allows you to paste them onto another enemy. You’d use this when you have superpowered DoTs thanks to trinket procs, Dark Soul and the like. Soulburn changes Soul Swap’s funtionality to instantly apply all 3 DoTs! This is useful at the pull of a boss, or when you want to apply all 3 DoTs quickly (when trinkets proc, for instance).

Curse of the Elements is simple. It places a 5 minute debuff on your target that makes it take 5% more magical damage. It’s passively applied by rogues and their poisons, so if a rogue is in your group, you don’t need to cast it! Soulburn makes it affect enemies in a 10 yard radius around the target.

Life Tap restores mana at the cost of health.

Dark SoulĀ is your DPS cooldown. The affliction version is called Dark Soul: Misery, and increases your haste by 30%. Line it up with trinket procs, if you can, for added oomph!

Rotation

Well, it’s more of a priority-based system, really.

  • Curse of the Elements. More damage!
  • Agony. Refresh it before it drops off.
  • Unstable Affliction. Refresh it before it drops off.
  • Corruption. Refresh it before it drops off.
  • Haunt. Refresh just after the debuff drops, and if you don’t need to refresh a DoT first.
  • Malefic Grasp/Drain Soul. The latter in execute.
  • Fel Flame if you need to move.
  • Life Tap if needed to regain mana.

Looks simple, right?

Demon of Choice

You’ll want to stick with the Felhunter, or the Observer if you use Grimoire of Supremacy. The Imp is good if you are switching target a lot, as it doesn’t have to run all over the place, it just stands there like a turret, throwing those little fireballs. Cute.

DoT Snapshotting

When you cast one of your DoTs, it snapshots your stats when it takes effect. It then uses these potentially boosted stats in the damage calculation, so you want to refresh your DoTs when you have powerful haste/intellect procs from trinkets.

Bear in mind that snapshotting is going away in patch 6.0, which means your DoTs will dynamically update their damage as things proc and drop off.

Talents

Soul Leech is pretty much the default talent of tier 1. It passively provides you with a damage-absorbing shield when Malefic Grasp, Drain Soul, Haunt and Fel Flame deal damage, equal to 20% of the damage dealt. It caps at 15% of your total health.

Mortal Coil is the talent I usually opt for in tier 2, as it provides a heal! The horror effect is usually resisted by most raid mobs and bosses.

Soul Link is the best choice in tier 3 if you’re using a pet, whereas if you’re using Grimoire of Sacrifice, Sacrificial Pact is slightly better.

Burning Rush is the talent I usually take in tier 4, as fast movement can come in very useful in certain boss encounters.

Grimoire of Supremacy is the current talent of choice for affliction in tier 5, as it sims as being the highest DPS. If you don’t want to deal with the tiny amount of micromanagement you might have to do with your pet, however, then Sacrifice may be better for you.

Archimonde’s Darkness is your best choice in tier 6 for fights with little to no movement. Fights which require lots of movement will see Kil’jaeden’s Cunning become the best choice. Mannoroth’s Fury is… kinda bad for affliction, unless you’re using Seed of Corruption a lot, and even then I’d go with one of the others.

Glyphs

Glyph of Unstable Affliction reduces the cast time of the named spell by 25%.

Glyph of Eternal Resolve turns the eponymous ability into a passive one that reduces damage taken by 10%.

Glyph of Siphon Life causes your Corruption to heal you for 0.5% of your total health every time it deals damage.

Glyph of Healthstone turns your fel cookies into HoTs that restore double the amount of health they’d normally do, but over 10 seconds.

Glyph of Curse of Exhaustion makes this curse reduce an enemy’s movement speed by 70%, but makes the debuff only last 15 seconds instead of 30. It also incurs a 10 second cooldown.

Glyph of Verdant Spheres turns those shards that appear above your head into wonderous green balls, as seen at the start of the article.

And finally, a quick section on…

Stat Priority

Intellect
Hit to 15%
Mastery
Haste
Crit

Anyway, this should be all the basic information you need to start playing affliction! Happy cursing! And don’t stand in the soup.
